Medicine as an attentive listening to time: historicity in medical education

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Teaching the history of medicine can be a powerful tool for health promotion¹, as it plays a strategic role in the recognition of professional ancestry and in the critical and humanistic training of future physicians². In this context, this study aimed to report on the activities and creation of the Academic League of History, Health, Medicine, and Society (Liga Acadêmica de História, Saúde, Medicina e Sociedade - LAHSME) at a public institution in northeastern Brazil.
METHODS:
This was a cross-sectional, descriptive, and qualitative experience report based on the activities developed by LAHSME between 2024 and 2025. LAHSME is a voluntary, extracurricular academic activity involving faculty and students.
RESULTS:
Twelve monthly meetings were held on the history of medicine, the evolution and forms of treatment of diseases, and the transformations in the health-disease relationship. The activities included valuing regional oral traditions; visiting the region's first hospital, the tomb of the city's first surgeon dating back to 1938, and the first delivery room; interacting with early 20th-century medical instruments (syringes, sutures, anesthetics); visiting traditional communities; conducting a workshop with local writers on the history of regional medicine; and participating in events on the history of medicine in Brazil to encourage scientific production.
CONCLUSIONS:
Health education based on the history of medicine is a powerful strategy for improving medical training in unique sociocultural contexts within the public health system.
