ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Neighborhood environment influences the formation of behavioral habits, as well as the risk of developing behavioral risk factors. Aim was to analyze the physical availability and affordability of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and tobacco products in three regions of Russia. Methodologies A study was conducted to assess the actual status of urban infrastructure in three regions of Russia (Arkhangelsk, Yekaterinburg, Tver). In order to assess the existing infrastructure, a special software was developed allowing to collect and analyses the required data using Open Street Maps. The data collection took place in January-March 2022.
RESULTS:
A total of 1180 alcohol outlets (AOs) and 726 tobacco outlets (TOs) were identified on the selected urban sites. The median value of the total number of AOs located within a radius of 1000 meters from the place of residence of an ESSE-RF3 participant was 33, within a radius of 400 meters - 8. A 0.5-liter bottle of vodka was sold below the minimal legal cost in 55.1% of specialized alcohol outlets in the Sverdlovsk region, and in 66.8% of such outlets in the Tver region. The median value of the total number of TOs located within a radius of 1000 meters from the place of residence of an ESSE-RF3 participant was 18, within a radius of 400 meters - 4. The median of the lowest selling price for one pack of cigarettes on the study sites was 120 rubles [110; 179].
CONCLUSIONS:
The results reflect the high physical availability and affordability of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and tobacco products and outline the need for interventions both at the state level, and at the level of local authorities.
