ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Malaria is an endemic disease that mainly spreads in tropical and subtropical regions. It is a recurring public health issue particularly in Benin. The present study aims to evaluate the performance of diagnostic methods and to determine the prevalence and distribution of Plasmodium species among patients suspected of malaria.
METHODS:
Blood samples were collected in EDTA tubes from patients received at the laboratories of CHUZ Abomey-Calavi/Sô-Ava and CHD Zou-Collines between June and July 2023. Microscopic examination was performed on each blood sample to evaluate the presence of plasmodia and parasite density. We also used RDT and PCR on these samples to confirm the species diagnosis.
RESULTS:
Microscopic examination detected Plasmodium spp. in 130 out of 246 analyzed samples, representing a malaria prevalence of 52.84%. The most affected age group was 15 years and above. Among the 246 samples 130 (52.84%) positive and 116 (47.16%) negative by microscopy 131 tested positive by RDT and 190 by PCR. Compared with microscopy, the sensitivity and specificity of the RDT were 80.76% and 77.58%, respectively. PCR species identification revealed three Plasmodium species: P. falciparum (98.94%), P. malariae (0.52%), and P. vivax (0.52%).
CONCLUSIONS:
This study highlights the predominance of P. falciparum in malaria transmission in Abomey-Calavi, followed by P. malariae and P. vivax. It also underscores the diagnostic value of RDTs as complementary tools for malaria detection.
