ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND:
Media plays a powerful role in shaping how mental health is understood, discussed, and acted upon in society. The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming media ecosystems through algorithmic content curation, generative text and images, automated moderation, and personalised information flows. These shifts have significant implications for mental health and the broader public health system, influencing public narratives, stigma, help-seeking behaviour, and trust in information. While AI is often framed as a tool for innovation and efficiency, its effects on mental health discourse and well-being remain under-examined within public health forums. The session will examine how AI-driven media systems shape mental health narratives, experiences, and responses across different contexts. Methods / Session Format This plenary will convene an intersectoral panel of mental health professionals, public health experts, and media professionals. Panelists will provide short, moderated reflections followed by facilitated discussion and audience engagement.
RESULTS:
The session will generate shared understanding of how AI is reshaping media representations of mental health and public health, including the amplification or mitigation of stigma, and the spread of misinformation. It will identify emerging risks and opportunities associated with AI-mediated media, including implications for public trust, emotional well-being, and access to reliable mental health information.
CONCLUSIONS:
By examining AI as a transformative force within media ecosystems, this plenary will contribute to dialogue on the intersections between media, AI, and mental health. The session will highlight the need for responsible media practices, ethical AI governance, and public health engagement to ensure that AI-driven media environments support mental well-being rather than exacerbate harm.
